Notes for RACHEL JESSEY MELDON:
Rachel's birth in Wales is a mystery. A search of the 1861 Census for Mynyddyslwyn revealed no trace of possible relatives. After the death of her father in 1870 she and her sisters lived at 8 back of 10 Brewery Street, Ashted, with her stepmother Ellen Piper until 24 April 1871 when they were admitted to a Quaker orphanage: Carrick House, Richmond Hill, Edgbaston on the recommendation of Rev. Benwell Bird. She left on 15 October 1874 and went to Miss Hudson, The Vale, Moseley. In the 1881 Census (LDS) her birthplace is given as Carmarthen, Wales. The 1901 Census gives her birthplace as Unknown Near Carmarthen.
